The dining culture varies from country to country. Eating cutlery is the basis of Western dining in particular, while in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia and South America it is normal to eat with your hands. Do
you like food and always try to taste local specialties? We will introduce you to several countries, you will not need any instruments to eat
- India
In remote areas of India, outside of big cities, the knife and fork are not widely used. Of course, it is acceptable to sip a raita (yogurt dip) from a spoon, but rice dishes, such as biryani, are usually eaten by hand. If you
want to try eating like a local (honestly it's wonderfully liberating), make sure you only use your right hand. The left hand is considered unclean, so it is not eaten or saluted.
- Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, too, her hands, especially her right. It is very interesting to serve a traditional injera dish. After baking, the pancake serves as a plate into which meat and vegetable mixtures are inserted. By the way,
when you tear off a piece of this edible plate, it will serve as a spoon. It is a good local practice to use only the first three fingers, ie the thumb, forefinger and middle finger.
- Mexico
Most Mexican food is eaten by hand (who would cut a buritto ?!). In restaurants, however, as vaccinated Europeans, they will give you a fork and knife as standard. If you grab the cutlery, avoid cutting or picking tacos with it. This is absolutely unthinkable! Try to eat like a local:
Instead of a spoon, use corn pancakes, ie tortillas. With their help, you can pick up beans, for example, and bite a edible spoon boldly. In general, in Mexico you can eat with your left hand.
- Indonesian cuisine
Also in Indonesia (eg Bali, Lombok, Java or Borneo) with her hands. Good local dining includes soiling not only your fingers, but your entire palm - it is eaten exclusively with your right hand. Indonesians have a fairly strict dining label: For example, it is not advisable to eat while
walking or blowing your nose at the table. Indonesians find this habit very repulsive. But when there is no leftover, you can cheerfully snuggle at the food, because that is perfectly fine for them.
- What can you eat with your hands with us?
Even in the Czech Republic, eating with hands according to etiquette is not completely forbidden. You can consume pastries or potato chips with a dip without instruments. If you do not know how to handle chopsticks,
you can also take sushi in your hand. Seafood lovers certainly know that by hand they also eat unpeeled shrimp and boiled mussels.
